Giardia е един от най-често срещаните паразити при кучета.
Giardia duodenalis, Giardia intestinalis, и Giardia lamblia са едноклетъчни паразити, които живеят в червата на кучето и се размножават там. Повечето кучета, заразени с Giardia, не показват сериозни симптоми. Здравият организъм се справя добре с определен брой протозои и сам ги елиминира.
Но когато Giardia порази кучета, които са с нисък имунитет и имат и други заболявания, болестта може да бъде в по-тежка форма.
Дали това ще се случи зависи от следните фактори:
1. Възраст: По-често се засягат кученца или млади кучета до 1 година.
2. Стрес: Както психологическият, така и физическият стрес (напр. тежки тренировки) увеличават риска от видимо заболяване.
3. Чревна флора: Ако нормалният бактериален състав в червата е нарушен, това предлага повече повърхност за атака на патогените. Получава се при неправилно хранене, употреба на лекарства, инфекции (напр. други паразити) или от стрес.
